Sutton Lake

Sutton Recreation Area

Sutton Lake

Sutton Lake sits in the Sutton Recreation Area north of Florence, fresh water separated from the surf by a single low ridge of dune. Campground loops stand on both shores under the shore pine, and the whole place feels closed in and quiet compared with the beach a few hundred yards west. The lake is small enough to paddle end to end in an hour and warm enough to swim by July. Trout are stocked through the spring, and the shoreline is mostly shallow and sandy, which makes it a forgiving first lake for children. Sutton Creek Trail starts at the beach trailhead, loops through the Heceta Dunes, and passes close to the lake before dropping to the sand, so the walk and the swim fit into one afternoon. Holman Vista, a short path to a platform above the dunes, is a few minutes up Sutton Beach Road.
