Perkins Lake
Umpqua Lighthouse State Park
Perkins Lake is a small lake in the pines at Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, a few minutes off Highway 101 at Winchester Bay. It is the sort of water that fits in a morning: a footpath runs around the shore, the far bank is never more than a few minutes away, and the light through the spruce keeps the edges cool. Families use it for exactly that reason. The water warms early in a shallow lake like this, the path is level and short, and the park's yurts and campsites sit within a few steps of the shore. Trout fishing is the other draw, best in spring after the stocking trucks have been through. Lake Marie and the Umpqua River Light are both a short walk or drive away, and the dunes start not far behind the campground. Perkins is the easy stop on the way south, and a good place to leave the car when the wind is up on the beach.
