Alder and Dune Lakes
Alder Dune Campground
Alder and Dune are two small lakes in the forest between Florence and Sutton Creek, set in the shore pines at Alder Dune Campground just off Highway 101. Neither is large; a canoe covers either one in a lazy half hour, and a trail links the two through the trees. Dune Lake is the one that gets stocked, which makes it an easy first pond for kids with a rod. Alder Lake is quieter and more sheltered, better for a short paddle or a look at the birds working the shallows at dusk. The campground's thirty-nine sites sit between the two, so a stay here means water on both sides without a drive. Hikers use the same roads to reach the Sutton Creek and Holman Vista trails, and the beach is a short walk west through the pines and over the dune.
